We can now offer a range of 12v and 24v DC air-cooled generators delivering up to 1500watts - fully switchable 12v/24v if required - which can supply your DC needs and also be used as emergency or top-up battery chargers. These have been specifically designed to provide high DC outputs - up to twelve times the output of AC/DC combination type generators. Limited by engine types available, the type of fuel used ranges from 2-stroke and 4-stroke petrol to diesel on the larger model. The generators are direct drive coupled and fully regulated. DC generators, providing 50-100amps, are not cheap, compared to Japanese and other AC output machines, with a DC facility, but the objectives of each are vastly different. The total costs are much closer, taking into account other factors: AC machines usually have a very small DC output. They need AC to DC transformers, in order to produce higher DC outputs. When used to power 230volt 12v/24v chargers for battery charging, there can often be an incompatibility between the voltage regulation on both machines, resulting in the engine ‘hunting’ or the charger failing to operate properly. A DC generator operates both DC equipment and charges batteries quickly and efficiently. Models 12v/24v 700watt/1500watt can be used to operate 12v and 24v power tools etc., a much safer proposition than using 110v/230v. The emphasis on reducing size and weight enhances the portability of the equipment. This can be of particular importance in racing yachts and vehicles where payload or storage space is at a premium. The 700watt petrol model weighs just 18Kg and the 1500watt diesel, 45Kg. At these weights, outputs of 50amps and 100amps represent a significant power-to-weight ratio.
