A common misconception regarding battery charging is that if the batteries are not being charged fully, then a larger alternator is required.
Generally, the problem is one of charging voltage (see Adverc BM System).
It is important to have the alternator output appropriate for the service bank capacity.
The start/bow thruster batteries can be discounted for this calculation as they will only require a few amps for recharge.
Our recommendation of 3:1 battery capacity to alternator rating for sailing yachts, 4:1/5:1 for narrow boats is proposed as a general guide.
Boats having a large battery bank, 500-1000 AHR, will require high output alternators.
A single alternator might be suitable but these large case alternators may cause problems in installation.
An alternative solution is to install an additional alternator and run them in parallel.
This solution can be less expensive than a single high output alternator.
A further benefit is that should one alternator fail, you still have power for charging.
